Basketry is the earliest art form of ancient cultures from around the world. Little is known of the wares made 11,000 years ago by a people from the southwestern region of North America now referred to as the "Basket Makers". They left behind a few vessels of coiled and plaited yucca leaves as well as woven fiber sandals. By 600 AD the traditional conical burden baskets with sophisticated geometric surface had appeared, and by the time the first Europeans arrived in the Americas basketry was a highly sophisticated craft varying greatly from one area of the continent to another and from one tribal group to the next. To continue this rich history of basketry, Odyssey Collection is proud to present baskets from around the world from a variety of ethnic and tribal groups. The fibers and weaves are rich in form and texture. Baskets are among my personal favorites to have in every room of my home, to display as an art form or to use as an utilitarian containers.
